Iris x hollandica

Uma das espécies mais vulgarmente usadas nos jardins é a Iris x hollandica. Tal como o 'x' indica esta é uma espécie híbrida que se originou a partir do cruzamento de duas espécies distintas, mas pertencentes ao mesmo género botânico (Iris): Iris tingitana e Iris xiphium. A primeira nativa do Norte de África e a segunda nativa da Península Ibérica, havendo duas variedades a praecox (de Espanha) e a lusitanica (de Portugal).

Pertencem à família Iridaceae e são popularmente conhecidas por Dutch iris (Iris holandesa), não porque cresçam neste país, mas sim porque o híbrido foi criado por produtores holandeses. São muito resistentes e ano após ano aparecem em força no meu jardim, e, como possuem são flores altas, estas surgem cheias de cor por entre as outras espécies. São perenes, adaptáveis a vários tipos de condições, excelentes flores de corte e é possível encontrar uma vasta variedade de cores e padrões. Eu possuo 5 variedades diferentes na minha coleção.

One of the most commonly used species in the gardens is the Iris x hollandica. As the 'x' indicates this is a hybrid species that originated from the crossing of two distinct species, but belonging to the same botanical genus (Iris): Iris tingitana and Iris xiphium.The first native of North Africa and the second native of the Iberian Peninsula, where there are two varieties: praecox (from Spain) and lusitanica (from Portugal).

They belong to the Iridaceae family and are popularly known as Dutch iris, not because they grow in this country, but because the hybrid was created by dutch producers. They are very resistant and year after year appear with strength in my garden, and, as they have tall flowers, they appear full of color among the other species. They are perennials, adaptable to various types of conditions, excellent cut flowers and you can find a wide variety of colors and patterns. I own 5 different varieties in my collection.
