Crocus

O género botânico Crocus pertence à família Iridaceae e apresenta cerca de 90 espécies bolbosas perenes e podem ser encontrados desde o Norte de África até ao Oeste da China, passando pela Europa central e do sul, médio oriente e Ásia central.

São muito semelhantes ao género Colchicum, diferenciando-se apenas no número de estames (3 nos Crocus e 6 nos Colchicum) e dos estiletes (1 nos Crocus e 3 nos Colchicum).

Apreciam solo leve, bem drenado e boa exposição solar, e foram um grande desafio para se adaptarem às condições do meu jardim. É o primeiro ano que consigo ter este género botânico, dado que o solo do meu jardim não é o mais indicado para eles. Na minha coleção possuo 8 espécies diferentes, incluindo o fabuloso Crocus sativus, já falado anteriormente, de onde se colhe a especiaria mais cara do mundo: o açafrão.

The botanical genus Crocus (Iridaceae family) has about 90 perennial bulbous species and they are native from Northern Africa to West of China, passing through Central and Southern Europe, middle East and Central Asia.

They are very similar to the Colchicum genus, differentiating themselves only in the number of stamens (3 in Crocus and 6 in Colchicum) and in the number of styles (1 in Crocus and 3 in Colchicum).

They prefer a light soil, as well as a good drainage and solar exposure. In spite of that they were a huge challenge to adapt to my garden, due to the conditions of my garden. This is the first year that I can successfully have them, since I have clay soil and, which isn't the most appropriate. In my collection I have 8 different species, including the fabulous Crocus sativus from where the most expensive spice in the world is harvested: the saffron.

In Portugal there are 2 Crocus species that can be found in the wild: Crocus carpetanus and Crocus serotinus. In the past month I registered photographically many Crocus carpetanus in my journey to Serra da Estrela. You can check everything in one of my last posts here.
